The radiation from a spectacular meteor shower leaves most of earth's population blinded. The thin veneer of civilization disintegrates rapidly and is replaced by quasi-feudal and brutal social order. The triffids, a mobile meat-eating plant, run amok, adding to the danger. Although, threatened by the triffids, the people are their own worst enemy. Wyndham uses the plot to make a social statement about Western society.
