The Characters of Theophrastus are unique in the history of letters. They have been much imitated, never bettered. The text can be obscure, and the Greek can be a little monotonous although not without a certain charm and aptness - as though the stark phrases were deliberately chosen to lay bare the failings of mankind. This revised edition includes up-to-date references, to supplement the Bibliography, and adds an Appendix of new material.
